A coalition of gay celebrities and activists, including Alan Cumming and Cynthia Nixon, are urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to fund housing protection for New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS in his new budget.
Actors Cynthia Nixon and Alan Cumming, national teachers union president Randi Weingarten, health care union SEIU 1199’s Kevin Finnegan and others appealed to Cuomo to change the “loophole,” according to a letter obtained by the Daily News.
The program for low-income New Yorkers with HIV is the state’s only housing subsidy that does not have a 30% cap on how much income can go to pay rent. Such a cap would help about 10,000 people now getting rental assistance. A Cuomo spokesman vowed to review the proposal.
